Cassel Discusses Official Visit
Cassel committed to SMU back in May and has been on campus quite a few times since then but this past weekend, the two-star signal caller made his official visit.
"It was pretty good. I can't complain about it," he said. "SMU is just a perfect fit for me both on and off the field. I really like the academics. I've already begun looking into sports management as a possible major."
On the field, Cassel hopes to come in and compete for the starting job right away. During his stay in Dallas, Cassel had the opportunity to speak to head coach June Jones about this and bonded with him over meal.
"He pretty much said that I'll have a fair chance to compete for a starting job next year. I'm going to take this offseason and spring to study film and get ready," Cassel said. "I feel I'm just as good as Neal Burcham and Conner Preston so hopefully I do get to compete.
"Coach Jones is really calm and not outspoken. I've never liked coaches that are in your face. He's really a players coach, and I really like that about him."
Cassel also feels the same way about his future position coach Dan Morrison and defensive coordinator Tom Mason.
"I talked to Coach Morrison and Coach Mason for a while. Me and Coach Mason talked about my town and how the coaches are doing. We also talked for a little bit about Isaiah Brandt-Sims," Cassel said. "Coach Morrison said some of the same things that Coach Jones said. He's really nice and calm."
Although Cassel will be competing with Burcham soon, he picked up some advice from the freshman quarterback, who also served as his player host.
"We didn't really talk about football," Cassel said. "He just told me about the coaches and how it would be good to learn from them and how they care. He also talked to me about academics."
Cassel is still rehabbing from a broken leg but is finally off crutches and says he hopes to start working out again next month and will focus on improving his reads.
