Beavs sacked in bowl game loss

OREGON STATE SURRENDERED a mind boggling 11 sacks in a 31-27 loss to Texas in the Alamo Bowl. The strange thing was, the Longhorns still had to come from 10 points down in the fourth quarter to win it.

That's because the Beavs played a strong game defensively, though they tired in the second half and particularly in the fourth quarter.

But through three quarters Texas QB David Ash had thrown for only 95 yards with one interception. In the first half, Texas had all of 53 yards passing and Texas running backs had combined for all of 22 ground yards.

But Ash then went 9 for 11 for 146 yards and two scores in the fourth quarter against a tired Oregon State stop corps.

Oregon State did not allow Texas a first down in the entire first quarter. The Beavs forced five three-and-outs to start the game, but an offsides on the fifth possession gave Texas the ball back and Texas immediately scored.

The Longhorns (9-4) never led until late in the fourth quarter.

Storm Woods ran for 118 yards and scored two touchdowns for Oregon State (9-4). But Woods missed a large chunk of the second half after an injury put him on the sidelines.

Cody Vaz was was 15 of 28 for 194 yards. He threw two picks and fumbled on another series. He did his best work when hooking up with TE Connor Hamlett, who hauled in five grabs for 70 yards.

In part. that was because Vaz was under assault all night long.

He was sacked 10 times in a game where the Beaver o-line had no answer for what had been an average Texas unit in terms of getting after the QB. Texas entered the game with 25 sacks on the season, in a 10-way tie for 53rd in the nation. Oregon State had allowed 23 sacks in 12 games this season.

Sean Mannion came in when Vaz dinged up an ankle. Mannion directed a 5-play drive in the first half where the Beavs scored. But he handed off on every play and never threw a pass. The next series, Vaz came back in and went the rest of the way. Recommended Stories
