Newman Picks Army

Caleb Newman

Lynden (Wash.) defensive end Caleb Newman breaks down his commitment to Army...

Lynden (Wash.) defensive end Caleb Newman headed out to West Point a couple weeks back and was very impressed.

"I did commit, I went out on a trip on the 18th and I really, really enjoyed it," said Newman. "I was excited about the opportunity. I felt ready to commit there, but I wanted to wait to come home. I wanted to think things over and make sure I was 100%. I waited until Tuesday of that week and committed."

Newman chose Army over an offer from Air Force.

"For me it was just personal. All the academies are great, but it felt like a better fit," said Newman. "With the service in the Army, it was just geared towards what I am about. It felt right while I was out there."

Newman was surprised how much the service opportunities ended up being a motivator for him.

"I know there are a lot of people with deep family military backgrounds and we even have a couple relatives back that were active in military," said Newman. "But I have never considered it; I didn't see how it would fit with my goals. When they offered I was interested, the more I learned and the more I knew I wanted to do it."

Newman had a long flight cross country to see the campus, but wasn't disappointed.

"I was amazed, I have never been to the East Coast," said Newman. "I am getting out there and knowing Thomas Jefferson and George Washington signed the papers to build the school. Just hearing stories all over campus, seeing all the buildings made of granite. It blew me away."

Newman could play outside linebacker or defensive end, it sounds like the Army coaches would be happy with either.

"One thing they said is they like recruiting versatile athletes," said Newman. "I can move around, so they aren't cemented on anything for me. But they want me to be coming off the edge and pass rush like in high school."
