Mount Vernon advanced to the WesCo District championship game with a 56-49 win over Edmonds-Woodway. The Bulldogs jumped out to a quick 11-4 lead and led 14-7 at the end of the first quarter. They had extended their lead to 26-16 by half time and took it as high as 14 in the opening minute of the fourth quarter on a Brady Miller bucket. But the Warriors were not ready to fold the tents and cut the lead to 5 points at 48-43 on a Jason Hopkins basket inside with 1:07 to play. Justin Burns, Miller and Jake Moore all hit a pair of free throws Shane Gibbon added another to push it back to 12 points at 55-43 with 20.2 showing. A Houston Conti trey at the buzzer made the final closer than it really was. Miller, a 6-4 junior forward, finished with 16 points while Moore added 14 and Burns 13. Conti had 15 to lead the Warriors, who now head to the losers bracket.
In the opener Mariner fell behind 12-4 before running off a 10-2 run to tie it at 14-14 at the end of the first quarter. It was knotted at 35-35 at the half. 6-8 junior Tommy Craddock opened the second half with a pair from the line after being fouled going hard to the basket. He followed that with a put-back bucket and added another put-back for his own 6-0 run to propel the Marauders to a 41-35 lead. Later after Lake Stevens had taken a 54-52 lead Craddock again came up big, scoring inside then grabbing a defensive board on one end and getting a tip-in for two on the other to put Mariner on top at 56-54. They would never trail again, gaining a 73-57 win.
Stanwood eliminated Kamiak 83-65. Junior guard Daes Kaufman scored 31 and Chris Sains added 20. The Spartans meet Edmonds-Woodway Tuesday in another loser-out affair.
