ESP Game Report: Bothell 29, Woodinville 7

Patrick Ottorbech

Bothell pulls off an upset against previously undefeated Woodinville. Setting themselves up for a Crown division title...

Most often the team that plays more physical and commits less penalties wins the game. This was the case at Pop Keeney stadium Friday night as Bothell rolled over Woodinville.

Bothell got on the board first with a very impressive 43 yard field goal by K Nick Kaylor that may have been good from 50. After exchanging punts Bothell put another drive together. As was the case most of the night they rode the legs of their star back Patrick Ottorbech for an 8 yard score. Bothell employed a hybrid version of the swinging gate all night. They used this to confuse Woodinville as the kicker threw for a two point conversion.

Woodinville shot themselves in the foot the entire first half. Twice extending Bothell drives on facemasks and unsportsmanlike penalties. All that being said, two plays almost had them back in the game. With only a few minutes left in the first half Woodinville ran a fake bubble screen that sent "blocking" WR Trevor Kelly deep for a wide open 46 yard touchdown. Bothell fumbled the ensuing kickoff and momentum had completely swung. Unfortunately for Woodinville, that was the last good news of the night as their 15 yard FG attempt was blacked with 11 seconds in the half. Bothell 11, Woodinville 7 Half.

Woodinville had the ball back after S Trevor Kelly made an amazing interception on a tipped pass. However, the drive stalled as Bothell stacked up Woodinville on a third and short with 5 minutes left in the 3rd. Bothell took the ball down and scored on a 3 yard TD pass to Perry Conricode. Again they used the hybrid swinging gate to get an easy 2 point conversion, 19-7 Bothell.

Woodinville faced an important 4th down on their next possession at midfield. They sent out the punt team and attempted to get the first down on a fake. I think that everyone in the stadium saw it coming and Bothell stuffed it for a loss. A 30 yard burst by Ottorbech had Bothell in range for a 20 yard FG that iced the game. Ottorbech finished with an impressive 192 on 23 carries. Bothell added one final touchdown when trying to bleed out the clock.

On this night Bothell looked like the tougher team. On defense they stood up Woodinville numerous times in short yardage situations. On offense, the Falcons had no answer for Ottorbech. The only reason he was held under 200 yards was that Bothell felt compelled to pass the ball. If they had just continued to feed their running back I think this contest would have been over far earlier. Bothell has risen an 0-2 start to a heavy favorite to win the crown division.
