Rainier Beach Coach Mike Bethea starts the “AT” period down on the South end of Rainier Avenue.

That’s “AT” as in “After Twins.” The Stewarts, Lodrick and Rodrick, have moved on to USC after back-to-back state titles. During their time at Rainier Beach Bethea’s teams made three straight appearances in the title game and enjoyed four consecutive years of making it to at least the semifinals.

But Bethea has “been there, done that” as far as seeing very talented players graduate and move on.

And though “Coach Mike” might like to think he has something in common with Old Mother Hubbard, his cupboard is far from bare.

All Bethea has is two starters back. But those two, 6-11 senior post/forward C.J. Giles (Miami commit) and 6-6 junior point guard Terrance Williams are both big time recruits.

And his new guys are not too shabby either. Joining the highly recruited Giles up front will be 6-9 junior James Morgan, 6-5 freshman Emeka Iweka and 6-7 Jarvis Stewart, who has hops along the lines of his departed twin cousins.

In the back court with Williams will be 6-3 sophomore Ryan Anderson who Bethea expects big things from. “He might be the best outside shooter I’ve ever had,” Bethea told us.

Bethea says his team’s strength will be “our size. We are pretty big. But we are also very inexperienced,” he cautioned.

“We had an OK summer” Bethea told us. OK may be an understatement as Beach won the regional And-1 tournament and earned a trip to the East Coast to play in the And-1 High School National Championship tournament.

Individually Giles and Williams performed on some of the nation’s biggest stages with their select teams and both are mentioned on various national recruiting lists as among the best in their respective classes.

Bethea sees this as a rebuilding year lists Seattle Prep as a favorite for both league and state honors as well as Cleveland and O’Dea as strong contenders from the always-tough Metro League.

Beyond the Metro Bethea said he likes West Valley (Yakima) as well as Renton and Mark Morris.

Rainier Beach will no doubt go through some growing pains as they figure out their roles. But with the cupboard of quality basketball players Bethea has, we see it as a very short learning curve.
